Question 2

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Gender

Femininity

In Black Widow femininity is presented as stylish. Women are shown to be well dressed and look knowledgeable on the subject of fashion. This is due to Raven Hearst and her costume, the trouser suit with the wedges.
Women are also presented as being psychotic through the unsettling frames when the actor (me) is looking straight at the camera. This shows that Raven Hearst is psychotic to the audience because looking directly at the lens is breaking the forth wall (in theatrical terms).

Females are also presented as calm and controlled, shown below in these two shots. When the actress is talking about the murder that she has just committed she looks composed which not only reinforces her psychotic nature but also shows females in a calm and controlled light.

Masculinity

Males are represented as ordered due to the uncluttered table, the colour co-ordination of the black and white and the general aesthetics of the shot.

Males are also represented as being laid back due to the slow moving morning routine and the shot of Detective Berkhart rubbing his eyes, this is also reinforced through the use of the song 'Lonesome Town'.

Question 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

I feel that out of the three media institutions that I researched Revolver Entertainment would be the most likely to distribute Black Widow.

This is because previously they have produced many movies similar to Black Widow such as, Tony.

I believe they would also be interested in distributing Black Widow because they use Guerrilla Marketing which is a very handy way to be able to market my film as we have a very low budget. As we originally thought Guerrilla Marketing would be a sensible way to advertise our film, working with Revolver Entertainment, who have experience with this type of marketing will be very useful as they already have plenty of experience.

The only issue when working with Revolver Entertainment will be that their headquarters is in Los Angeles, although they were founded in the UK, they are now much more prominent in the US so we may have to travel over there, which could cause inconveniences.

Question 4

Who would be the audience for your media product?

The audience for Black Widow would generally be within the ages of 15 to 30 (so our certificate would most likely be 15), both male and female due to both the protagonists being a male and a female. The variety in audience will mean that it is easier to market my film and will probably mean a larger audience turnout at cinemas or more DVD's sold.

Black Widow is a Crime-Mystery film which attracts audiences because people like mystery and suspense. They are also a way to be scared but also at the same time to know that you are safe. It is a way for the audience to experience something that they may not come across everyday. These kind of experiences attract an audience because they want to experience them in their leisure time.

As we have conformed to Crime-Mystery genres conventions and also our audiences Questionnaires we expect the audience to be satisfied with Black Widow.

Generally (because of our low budget) the nationality of our audience will probably be British but because Revolver Entertainments also operates in Los Angeles it may also be released there, so it has the potential to have an American audience as well.

Question 5

How did you attract/address your audience?

I attracted and addressed my audience through sharing what I was doing in the planning and production of Black Widow and also through answering constructive criticism and responding to Questionnaires.

In my Questionnaires I asked the audience what they would like to see in the opening of a Crime-Mystery Film. They all said that they would like and expect to see the scene of a murder in the opening minutes. To add to this I also added in what seems to be a normal character, Detective Berkhart as a way for the audience to relate to a character and therefore become more interested within the first minutes.

The relationship between Berkhart and Hearst is meant to engage the audience and create a sense of mystery within the first few minutes because of their limited contact with each other. By doing this I enthral the audience in the action and get them to keep watching because they want to know more.
